This is the Mercer-Williams house next to Monterey Square in Savannah. It was built by Johnny Mercer’s great-grandfather, and was once occupied by Jim Williams. His killing of his assistant, Danny Hansford, was the basis of the book and movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil.
I was so enamored of the architecture in Savannah. Of course, late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century architecture anywhere amazes me because of its ornate facades and incredible attention to detail, sadly lacking in most of today’s structures.
Aside from the well-kept historic squares throughout the downtown area, I noticed how many cobblestone and brick streets and sidewalks there were. Imagine how much longer it takes to place bricks in the basket weave pattern you see here, compared to pouring concrete. But then consider how much more character the bricks lend to the scene.
I’m smitten with Savannah. I will definitely be going back for more photos and to read all of the historical monuments I didn’t have time to read this time.
This was shot in the harsh light of noon, so it doesn’t capture the warmth of the coral bricks and the lushness of the foliage, but hey, ya shoot whatcha got. :)
